Breakfast is by far my most favorite meal of the day. So much so, that I have written quite a few breakfast recipes around here. When I visit any destination, experiencing the local cuisine is always on the list. Considering that I spent most of on life in St. Thomas, it’s kind of peculiar that I had not been to the Delly Deck for their local breakfast. But alas…on a a recent visit to St. Thomas I finally made it.

The Delly Deck is a restaurant that has been in St. Thomas for nearly 40 years. It is located in an area known as Havensight Shopping Mall which serves as a port for cruise ships and also has a plethora of duty-free shopping options. But, on a Saturday morning not too long ago, I visited this shopping area not to shop but, to eat some local St. Thomas breakfast. A traditional island breakfast in St. Thomas consists of saltfish (salt cod), Johnny cakes (fried bread), cucumbers or salad and a cup of bush tea ( a mixture of lemon grass, sometimes rosemary or whatever else is growing or looks good really).

The Johnny cakes are quite tasty. A mixture of flour, water, salt, milk and sometimes some sugar depending on who is making it, fried to a golden brown. Everyone has their own little spin.

If you want some American breakfast you can get that too.

American favorites like banana pancakes and bacon and eggs also adorn the menu.

So if you have some island time planned in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands…you may want to put the Delly Deck on your radar. But, remember, you can only get the local breakfast special on Saturdays and it’s not on the menu. Just ask them for the “local breakfast” and tell them Lisa from The Domestic Life Stylist sent you.
