My son is now 6 years old. Wow! Let me let that sink in for a moment. I have always prided myself on coming up with unique birthday ideas for each of the kids. The typical birthday party scenario has never been our thing.

Last year for my “sonshine’s” 5th birthday we hopped on a boat, went on a pirate sail in our area and he and sister even got to pick special prizes from the treasure chest. That’s when I figured out that a pirate birthday party is a great, unique birthday idea.

The first clue.

Initially I thought that perhaps a trip to Sesame Place would be in order, but when I found out that we would be traveling to my island home, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, I was fresh out of ideas.

Make sure to study each clue carefully.

After all, when I was growing up on St. Thomas, a good birthday was one spent on the beach with family and friends.

While there was no problem spending time on the beach, I wanted to do something unique for his 6th birthday. That’s where Tropical Treasure Hunt came in. Think of Tropical Treasure Hunt like an Escape Room but, instead of being confined to a dark room, your “Escape” happens in the beautiful Virgin Islands.

Co-founders Anthony and Angela, of Tropical Treasure Hunt were kind enough to organize a gifted hunt for my son and our family. We met up with Anthony the night before to give him some gifts that we’d purchased for the birthday boy.

Some toy cars, some cool collapsible sand buckets and dive masks. My little sonshine was beaming from ear to ear. Without giving too much away, what I appreciate about Tropical Treasure Hunt is that they take their time to customize treasure hunts with the guests in mind.

There’s no one size fits all approach here. And even though it was our son’s 6th birthday…mom, dad, sissy and grandma enjoyed the treasure hunt all the same.

This experience should be added on your list of “What to Do” on your vacation to St. Thomas.

And if you don’t have plans to visit St. Thomas (seriously, why don’t you…), another unique birthday idea is setting up a pirate sail especially if you’re looking for pirate party ideas.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be for a birthday either. Pirate sails are a fun event to do with your family as long as the weather is nice.

Closer to my current home, Pirate Adventures on the Chesapeake is a company located in Annapolis, Maryland. You can set up group events, birthday parties or just a fun day out on the water. As a matter of fact, not only are there ways to score discount tickets all summer long, but I’ve also partnered with Pirate Adventures on the Chesapeake to host a giveaway for one family of four.

We found the treasure! And I’m a big kid.
