Where To Buy Salmon Filets
I’m pretty biased when it comes to salmon and have one main rule. You have to start with wild-caught salmon. Anything else can be GMO and full of toxins. And that’s a no-no.
If you have access to a fresh fish market that can be a great place to get wild caught salmon. Unfortunately, many grocery stores are filled with mislabeled fish. In other words, it is labeled as wild salmon but is really is not. Bottomline, wherever you buy your salmon, ask questions
And if it’s not specifically labeled as “wild” it’s not wild caught.
Sadly, even the best organic grocery stores carry farm raised salmon, so you really have to be diligent. Thankfully, there are some companies out there doing it right. If you’re looking for a good source of wild salmon fillets, try Wild Alaskan Seafood.
I’ve used them for some time now and really enjoy their products.

Difference Between Types Of Salmon & Which Ones To Get

Atlantic Salmon
While the vast majority (ninety percent) of salmon eaten in North America is Atlantic salmon, it may come as a surprise to you that there are other varieties of salmon as well. Atlantic salmon (while common) is often raised on feed lots and fed a non-native diet.
There is hardly any Atlantic salmon that is wild anymore. Since this Atlantic salmon is farmed raised, the resulting fish gets little exercise, is prone to more disease and has a less favorable omega fatty acid profile.
These fish are fed a processed diet and are kept in crowded commercial fisheries which makes them more prone to disease, impurities and are less nutritious.
I know…I know…and here you were led to believe that eating an all seafood diet was taking step in the right direction.
Coho Salmon
Coho salmon can be wild or farm raised. It you can ensure that the coho salmon is wild, then by all means get it. Wild coho salmon has a little bit more omega fatty acids than other types of salmon. If you’re not sure if the coho is wild, then steer far away.
Sockeye Salmon
As of publishing, sockeye salmon is typically wild caught. The meat of sockeye salmon has a reddish hue. The deep hue is due to sockeye’s krill diet which is rich in astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant.
For this and other salmon recipes, I recommend that you use wild coho or sockeye salmon.
Health Benefits of Wild Salmon
Sheet pan salmon is a healthy meal that requires minimal prep. Here are some of the health benefits of eating wild salmon.
Antioxidant: Wild salmon contains astaxanthin, a really powerful antioxidant. It’s great for overall body health and offers protection from sun burn and skin cancer too.
Health Fats: A great source of omega fatty acids. Specifically, DHA and EPA. These omega fatty acids are wonderful for heart and brain health.
Vitamins and Minerals:: Some of the vitamins and minerals in wild salmon include vitamins B, vitamins D, potassium and selenium.
Source of Healthy Protein: One of the most important aspects when putting together nutritious meals is a great protein source. Thankfully, wild salmon is a phenomenal source of quality protein.
