Garlic Salve As A Natural Remedy

One of my favorite things to talk about is the healing properties of food. I can tell you first hand (as a clinically trained pharmacist), not enough time is spent on natural and herbal remedies in medical, pharmacy or even nursing school. But you already knew that. Nature came first and majority of the times, a nature based approach is best.

This is one of the reasons I wrote my book Be FINE: Your Drug Free Prescription to Age Well Beat Bulge and Stop Disease. The book gets to the bottom of what’s really ailing you, how to boost your immunity and changes you can make for yourself and your family. If you’d like to purchase a copy of my book, you can buy it here.

Even so, you’re the one in charge of making your own medical decisions. And this my friends is not medical advice. Read more about my medical disclosure here

Garlic is one of the most powerful healing natural foods that there is. Regardless if you refer to garlic as a herb or a spice, not only is garlic a tasty ingredient, but it is also a great home remedy. In fact, garlic is so beneficial, I even wrote about it in my book. Internally, garlic reduces the build up of plaque, can lower cholesterol, acts as powerful antibiotic and has potent anti-inflammatory potential.

But this post is about using garlic salve as a natural option for colds, coughs, flus and sore throats. Homemade garlic salve is one of those natural remedies you want to have on hand during “sick” season. You may be able to buy over the counter garlic salves made with garlic extract, but there is no way of knowing how long it has been sitting on the shelf or if it is still effective.

Healing Garlic Salve for Cold And Coughs

One of the most dreaded time of year is “cold and flu” season. I sometimes call it cold and “everything”  or “sick season” because people are way past just worrying about the cold and flu these days. More accurately though, if you take care of your body and your immunity, this time of year is a non issue and presents no or limited health challenges.

Truthfully, God only made four season. And no matter what the media says, “cold and flu” is NOT one of them.

However, while I often write about the proactive side of wellness, you should always be ready if a nasty cough or runny nose were to come your way.

Fresh garlic is an absolute must to boost the immune system. This raw garlic can be made into an antibiotic salve and rubbed on the soles of feet, on the chest, neck and throat. The honesty of these natural ingredients is just how medicine used to and still should be.

This garlic salve is made with all natural organically sourced ingredients, medicinal herbs and finished with love. This recipe is simple yet effective. If you’d like to add essential oils, you only need to add a small amount to make a huge impact. But, added it is definitely not necessary.

Health Benefits of Garlic

natural antibiotic – Allicin, a sulfur containing compound is credited with making garlic an effective antibiotic.

anti-inflammatory properties – Used to treat inflammation both internally and externally

anti-fungal – Garlic extract has been shown to have efficacy against yeasts that can cause yeast infections and athletes foot.

skin benefits – The effects of garlic extend to the skin too. Garlic has been found to be effective against everything from acne to pesky fungal infections. See above.

Tools Needed

Ingredients To Make Garlic Salve

organic garlic – Garlic has been used as a medicinal agent for thousands of years.

unrefined organic coconut oil – Use unrefined coconut oil for a smooth consistency that is also nourishing to the skin.

organic extra virgin olive oil – The vast majority of olive oil is adulterated. I wrote about how to spot fake olive oil and tips to ensure it’s authenticity in my book, Be FINE. Here’s a trustworthy brand of olive oil you can use in this recipe.

How to Make Garlic Salve

Step 1: Peel garlic and cut into small pieces.

Sep 2: Place into a high-powered blender with coconut oil and half the olive oil.

Step 3: Blend for a few minutes and continue adding the rest of the olive oil until a smooth texture is achieved.

Step 4: If there are any remaining chunks of garlic, you can push the salve through a strainer.

Step 5: (Optional) Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and mix. Organic lavender essential oil is a favorite of many due to it’s soothing and calming properties.

Step 6: Store in the refrigerator. The salve will thicken once it’s refrigerated.

Step 7: Use cold or allow to come to room temperature before use.

Tips to Make A Smoother More Potent Garlic Salve

Depending on your blender, you may still have some chunks of garlic remaining (even after blending). If that’s the case, leave the garlic in the liquid to steep at room temperature for 24 hours. This will ensure the best potency of the resulting salve.

Once steeping is complete, strain any remaining garlic chunks from the liquid using a small strainer. Pour the reserved liquid into a small container and store in the refrigerator.

Important to Note:

If you have sensitive skin, it’s important do a small patch test before using this or any topical formulas.

Recommended For Topical Use Only

Rub on neck, chest or place on the bottom of the feet with socks on for relief from congestion, cold, cough or flu. Apply up to three times a day.
