Skin Brightening Green Pea Smoothie with Blueberries

An easy recipe for green pea smoothie with blueberries that adults and kids will love. Using just a few simple ingredients, this recipe is an upgrade to traditional green smoothies.

They’re quick. Delicious and so filling. 

You probably already know that a combination of frozen fruit and leafy greens is a magical thing. This smoothie is a little different though. Instead of leafy greens I used frozen green peas in combination with wild blueberries to make this delicious recipe. 

Here’s How This Green Pea Smoothie with Blueberries Smoothie Came to Be 

I was with the kiddies one day and we decided to make smoothies. I was initially going to make my favorite kale berry smoothie, but wanted to try something different since we had quite a few green peas in the freezer. Plus, green peas are full of health benefits. 

Health Benefits of Green Peas 

First off, adding green peans to smoothies also adds a tremendous protein boost. Just 1 cup of green peas has about 8 grams of protein. In addition green peas also contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. 

 One cup of green peans also contains a whopping 58mg of vitamin C. That’s more vitamin C than one small orange or a glass of orange juice. Vitamin C plays a major role in collagen production and hence is a common ingredient in skin care products. 

This minerals are masterful in maintaining a healthy blood pressure. But, my favorite reason to add frozen green peas to smoothie is that not only does it keep the smoothie nice and cold, but green peas contain a powerful anti-aging ingredient known as spermidine. 

I don’t want to get into all “sciencey:  here, but spermidine has been know to improve mitochondrial function, promotes autophagy and increases cell rejuvenation. This is important for things like reducing the risk of dementia, lowering the risk of heart disease and other diseases that may come with age. So as you can see, there is a lot of nutrition. 

Have you ever had peas in a smoothie?

Does is sound disgusting? The addition of green peas only imparts a mild flavor to the smoothie.  As a matter of fact, many plant-based protein powders are made with pea protein. So if you’ve ever had vegan protein powder or purchased a smoothie from a smoothie shop, there could have been some pea protein powder in there. Using frozen peas is a good option to get the protein boost directly from the source without watering the smoothie down. 

It’s a great choice to save some money too. 

Although most many protein powders include yellow and green split peas, this recipe uses sweet green peas.

  • Wild blueberries: Wild berries are are full of antioxidants which is great for skin and good health overall. 
  • Coconut milk: Coconut milk is full of healthy fats. 
  • Coconut water: Coconut water is full of electrolytes and is also hydrating. 
  • Bananas: Bananas are full of potassium and keeps the pH balanced and great for for skin health. 
  • Bone broth powder: is full of gut healing and skin boosting benefits. Here’s one I like.

Blueberries are of course packed with antioxidants, coconut water with electrolytes, coconut milk has healthy fats and is great for skin health.

My Secret to Making the Perfect Green Pea Smoothie 

Want to know how to make the perfect smoothie? It’s really simple. I use frozen fruits and vegetables so that the smoothie doesn’t get watered down. That means starting with frozen peas, frozen blueberries and a frozen banana. If you have fresh ingredients on hand you can opt to use them, but you’ll have to add a handful of ice. 

I like starting out with frozen ingredients like peas and bananas because it makes it’s the smoothie really thick and smooth.
