Someone needs to tell you the truth. If no one else will tell you, then I will.

You’re lying to yourself about your health.

Plain and simple. Day in and day out. Year in and year out. Not much has changed. If anything, things have just gotten worse over the years. It’s not malicious intent. As a matter of fact, you may not even know that you’re telling yourself these half truths. It’s a New Year and it’s time for a new you. But before you change it up, it’s time to get honest first. Here are five ways that you’re lying to yourself about your health. It may sting a little but like a true friend, I don’t want you to go out like that. So let’s just cut to the chase…

It’s an Inconvenience

Yes, it takes time and effort to get and stay healthy. But getting healthy is not the real inconvenience. Being unhealthy is. Filling prescriptions every month is an inconvenience. Limited mobility is an inconvenience. Lost days at work, shortened lifespans, high deductibles, repeat doctors visits, high blood sugar, restless nights and aches and pains are an inconvenience. Wouldn’t you rather take the “inconvenience” of being healthy than the real inconvenience of being unhealthy?

It’s Hard

My friends, there are so many other difficult things that you have faced and overcame that are harder than getting and staying healthy. Want me to name a few?

Childbirth
Military training and deployment
Divorce
Cancer
In laws (not mine)
Raising kids
Starting a business
Writing a book
Dealing with an overbearing boss
Loss of loved ones
Getting your bachelors, masters, or even doctorate degree
Being a single parent
2 hour daily commutes

Do you get the point? You can do it. Well, if you want to. The problem is, you really don’t want to.

You Want to Do It Without Making Any Changes

Do I have to miss out on this? Why can’t I do or have that? If you’re not willing to change the behavior then, you don’t really want to get healthy. You’re going to have to find new “normals”. That’s just it. What if I told you that you could earn one million dollars in the next year but didn’t have to do anything differently to get it?
You would think that I was absolutely crazy right?

Even someone that plays the lottery has to put in the effort to pick the numbers, go to the convenience store to get the tickets and watch the drawing to see if she’s won. Once and if she’s won then there are some legalities that have to take place to earn that prize. A new healthy version of you is that prize. But you have to work. You have to work your butt off to get it. The first time you play, you may not win. But keep at and don’t give up. Stop telling yourself that you’ve tried and it didn’t work.

Change it up. Do something different. Just don’t stop trying.

The great news is the odds are better in this game. The chances weigh heavily in your favor and if you keep trying, you will win.

You’re Too Busy

This may be the biggest lie yet. We make time for the things we want. Plain and simple. I’m not saying that we’re not at all busy but, what I am saying is even busy people that want to eat healthfully and exercise do. Companies like Blue Apron, Plated, Amazon and Beach Body make their profit by selling people the idea of making healthy food and exercise more accessible and essentially excuse free from the comfort of home.

Let me put it this way, if you can find time to navigate Facebook, watch the latest episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta, never miss an episode of your favorite show on Netflix, catch up on the latest gossip in your favorite magazine, religiously have time for the evening news or never miss a hair appointment, you have the time.

If your nails never miss a fill…darling, you have the time.

We all do.

The question is, do you want to use some of your time to take care of your health? I’m tired of people advocating for self care when it comes to massages, vacations and hair appointments but, then “never have the time” to eat healthfully or take better care of their bodies. Let’s call a thing a thing. You just don’t want to use your time that way. If that’s true, so be it. But be honest with yourself about it first. If your problem is motivation read my post, how to stay motivated to your exercise routine.

Everyone has to Die…Why Deprive Myself

Everyone has to die and no one can run when his or her time has come. But here’s the thing…while you’re here it pays to be healthy. Less pain, less suffering and more living can ensue when choosing a healthy lifestyle. One of the biggest regrets of people on their deathbed is that they didn’t take care of their body. The good news is that if you are reading this, there is still time to make some changes.

Why wait for ailing health, a family reunion, unwanted surgery, a wedding, family loss or near death experience to choose differently? Do it today! Spend less time in the doctor’s office, more time with your family and friends, keep more money in your pocket and pay for your health on the front end by choosing the foods that will lift you up, rather than drag you down. Food that will fill you with life, not shorten your life. Foods that will enliven and not rob you of your vitality.

Stop lying to yourself about your health. Self care and true healthcare is a gift that only you can give.

So give generously.

Did you read this to the end?

Good.

Now, here’s the question…”What are you going to do about it?”.

Amen!!! Listed to your pep talk while on the stairmaster!
Many women don’t make time for strength training, but it is the best way to build bone quality! It is hard to play catch-up after you are diagnosed with osteoporosis. And, the meds are more damaging to your body after 5 years!

I agree. Strength training is so important Kim. As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
