I love a good hack. I mean who doesn’t? They remind of the original MacGyver tv series. That shouldn’t come as a surprise if you follow my “Life Hacks” board on Pinterest or saw my shoe hacks segment on the Dr. Oz show. But what good is a home hack if it doesn’t really work. Here are five home hacks that work and work well. Tell your friends.

Fix Squeaky Doors
Have you ran out of your favorite glass cleaner? Being a creature of habit may be costing you money. When I recently ran out of glass cleaner, a quick Internet search caused me to stumble across several recipes for homemade glass cleaner. Recipes like the one below have been tweeked several times so it’s difficult to find the original source. Here’s my version of the recipe:
2 cups water (slightly warm)
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/2 rubbing alcohol
1 tsp corn starch
1/2 lemon
1 tbsp almond extract or essential oils
Pour into a spray bottle and shake really well.
I used an old spray bottle and shook the resulting contents well afterwards. It worked wonders but, the smell wasn’t very appealing. Once I added the almond extract the vinegary scent vanished. Rain Drop, said it’s like magic.
Not only that, this homemade glass cleaner worked better than the store bought stuff. Not kidding at all. Actually, my daughter said, “This is better than Windex!”. I wouldn’t have believed it, if I didn’t make it myself.
2 tablespoons olive oil, 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar and 1/4 tsp lemon juice. You may want to play with the amount of olive oil depending on the amount of shine desired.
All you need is some nail polish remover and a cotton ball along with your old sneakers to get them looking like new again.
Have you spilled some candle wax onyour carpet?…no problem. All you need is an iron and paper towel. Simple place a folded paper towel over the spot, place the iron on medium low heat and go over the wax a few times. I demonstrate how on my recent appearance on Good Morning Washington.
Next time you have a squeak, apply coconut oil directly to the source of the sound. A can of coconut oil spray works best for application and makes squeaky doors a thing of the past.
