10 Tips to Slay Your Summer Staycation

I get it. This summer is way different than any others you have experienced. There is no or limited travel. And even when there is travel, it is greatly altered and looks vastly different from summers before. Most kids are skipping summer camps, virtual VBS is now the norm, and the highlight of the week is when you find out the neighborhood pool will be available for use only after signing your life away on an extensive waiver.

But don’t worry though, there are still ways to slay your summer staycation that don’t involve constantly complaining about the way things were.

1. Let the Sunshine In

Getting ample sunshine is not just about achieving a great summer tan, sunshine is the best way to get adequate amounts of vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for good bone health and pumps up immunity. I don’t know where you live, but I’d be willing to bet that there are amazing parks, farms, beaches and other points of interest that are just waiting for you to discover them.

The problem is, your mind is so laser focused on how things were, that it’s easy to see what’s right in front of you.

If you don’t know where to start, nearby walking paths and neighborhood parks are easily accessible and make for great family time. If you feel a bit more adventurous, try visiting state and national parks. As an incentive to enjoy nature with your family, every September 1st, everykidoutdoors.gov provides free passes to national parks to fourth graders and their families for the entire school year. Finding an orchard or farm to pick summer fruit in season is another tasty way to enjoy nature.

6. Get Involved in Backyard Shenanigans

If you’re blessed to have an outdoor space or backyard outside your home, a summer staycation is great time to recreate it and have some fun. Both adults and kids can enjoy sprinklers, slides and other fun water play. An outdoor projector can even turn your backyard into a fun movie night escape.

Think outside the box and bring your backyard to life.

7. Dine Alfresco

Now who said that you had to live in Europe to dine al fresco? Amidst the pandemic, many restaurants have converted vacant parking spaces and have been creative about providing outdoor dining options to guests.

If you’re not ready to venture out to a restaurant just yet, just grab your favorite foods, a picnic basket, and picnic blanket and head to the beach or your favorite park.

8. Walk It Out

The weather is nice and walking is free, so you have no excuse not to lace up your sneakers and go walking wherever you choose.

Walking while window shopping or bird watching counts as walking too. Strap on your fitness tracker before you head out the door and get an extra boost of motivation to get those extra steps in. Getting healthy and fit is fabulous way to slay your summer staycation.

Tip: Be sure to wear the right walking shoes during walks so that it doesn’t do more harm than good.

9. Get Masked

I’m not talking about personal protection equipment. Taking time for yourself and including facials as part of your self-care routine is pampering at it’s best. Not only that, but wearing PPE in the form of masks can lead to acne and skin irritation due to friction and reusing dirty masks.

So practice good hygiene while mask wearing.

10. Switch Things Up

Listen, none of us planned to spend our summer figuring out what “phase” we are in or how to entertain our kids when they haven’t seen their friends in forever.

Living in the past is no way to move towards a positive future. Now is the time move into a new state of being for our “new state of being”. Convert that old room into a relaxation room that you can retreat to when the world has gone a bit off course.
