It’s a bit odd but, for someone who grew up wearing summer clothes all year long, I just love a great looking fall coat. Outerwear is an often forgotten and sometimes neglected part of “mom style”, but it really shouldn’t be. Think of your fall coats as the syrup on your pancakes, the sprinkles on your sundae, the dressing on your salad. A great coat can liven up any outfit, while a lousy one can drag it down.
Even if you don’t know where to start, right now is a good time to give your fall outerwear a jump start. For the basics I suggest a cropped leather or vegetarian leather jacket, single breasted wool coat, a trench and a longer dress coat for nicer occasions. Once temperatures start to take the plunge, a down or feather filled coat is a great staple to have. Minimize bulk with coats that are belted. I remember on a trip to Milan many years ago, I saw these coats long before the style made it the US. I guess that’s why Milan is the fashion capital of the world. This Vince Camuto down and feather coat fits really well and is definitely one of my favorites.
As far as colors go start with black, brown, camel for the basics but, definitely don’t be afraid to add some color too. Fall and winter coats in rich blues, bright pinks and yellow are a fabulous addition to any wardrobe.
Last year, I snagged two great coats during the Lord and Taylor Columbus Day sales. They are certainly investment pieces that will be a part of my wardrobe for many years to come. And of course, whenever we travel to Europe, I always keep my eyes open for a great buys. Souvenir t-shirts and mugs are overrated anyway. So are you ready to give your coat closet a face lift? Below, you’ll find a great mix of fall steals and splurges that will make your coat rack swoon.
