Family Getaway: Kid Friendly Things to Do In Sonoma, California

Family Fun in Sonoma Valley -Pre Summer Travel Series (Part 1)

The unofficial start of summer is 4 weeks away. Whoo hoo! Do you have any great trips planned? Well, my family and I are blessed in that we get to travel quite a bit. My daughter (Ms. Sunshine) is two, so we still have the freedom of being able to travel throughout the year, which is great. Recently, we had the opportunity to visit four distinct locales and I am going to share my travel notes with you.

Sonoma, CA

When we decided to go to Sonoma, my first thought was, “Certainly, we can’t take the little one”. After all, Wine Country is only for adults right? Boy, was I wrong! Of course, there are activities that are best suited for adults, but Sonoma is great for families as well.

Take Train Town for example, it is 10 acres packed with activities for little tykes. Top off a train ride with a carrousel, fun games, petting zoo, mini ponds, and a “little people’s town” and you have a day made in toddler heaven.

Pizza places like the Red Grape, have been called a “culinary jewel” by some. We stopped by for a visit and the pizza was amazing.

Eateries in downtown Sonoma like this one, have fresh baked goods, deli sandwiches, and a bottle of wine is never far away in Sonoma. You can even order a picnic lunch to go at this one (see below)!

The central square next to the Sonoma Visitor’s bureau has a lovely lawn, the perfect place for a picnic lunch.

And because it is Sonoma Valley, you would be remissed if you did not visit a vineyard. Contrary to popular belief, many wine tasting tours are family friendly. Although, I do not routinely drink and am such a “light weight”, that I cannot have a glass of wine…I thought that it would be silly to head to Sonoma Valley and not visit at least one winery. Well, in our case two.

We got there approx. one week before the grapes came in. These vines are bare!

We decided to visit the Benziger Family Winery and the Artesa Winery and Vineyard. Simply amazing!

The fact that the Benziger Family Winery has a tram tour, a play ground and one of the few vineyards that uses biodynamic, organic farming methods made it a gem for me. Talk about an opportunity for an impromptu lesson in biology. It is a must see indeed!
To top it all off, no trip would be complete without a gourmet cupcake.
Sweetie Pies in Napa Valley offers a delectable assortment but, I ate it too quickly to take a good picture.
Tune in next week to read about our family trip to London, England.

  1. Sonoma isn’t that far from me but, I admit, I’ve never been there. Thank you for the tips for a future family vacay. Can’t wait to hear about London!

  2. Very nice! I hope you write a blog post about how to budget for a family vacation (assuming you haven’t already done so).
